Writing Plans for 2026
Reaching the milestone of ten years has led me to reflect on the journey so far but also to think about the steps I need to take to make sure that writing and publishing continues to be sustainable for me going forward. I want to continue to be able to provide you with stories that both entertain and refresh for another ten years and beyond!
In order to do that, however, I've had to be real about the current level of burnout and overwhelm that has been weighing me down. After much reflection, I've decided to take a significant chunk of time this year to step back from writing and allow myself to rest and to refill my creative well. I'm very hopeful about the benefits of this time on my future writing, but I'm also conscious that it means I won't be able to write my planned four full-length novels this year. The only one that will be continuing as planned is the next Kingdoms of Legacy release, Legacy of Gold, which is due to release on Boxing Day this year.
However, I don't want to leave you with no new stories between January and December either! I've therefore made the decision to write several novellas to release throughout the year. To give you a bit more information on what to expect, I've included a Q and A below.
Q: How long will the novellas be?
A: These will be shorter novellas than the ones I have written previously. My most recent two novellas were pushing close to 40k words which is the point at which it officially tips over from a novella to a short novel. I expect these new novellas to be considerably shorter—most likely in the 20k-25k range. However, I believe this will still give enough length to deliver a fun and satisfying story, although they will likely focus mostly on the romance and personal stakes for the characters rather than kingdom level threats—those are best left for the longer novels!
Q: What world will the novellas be set in?
A: Two different worlds! The first novella to release will be going back to my Spoken Mage world and telling a new story, set in the years between The Spoken Mage series and The Hidden Mage series. After that, I will be dipping my toes into an entirely new story world.
Q: Will the new story world be a fairy tale world?
A: It won't be a fairy tale retelling world, but it won't be a mage academy either. Think fun, cozy, and teeming with lovable enchanted creatures!
Q: How many novellas will be released this year?
A: Three! There will be one Spoken Mage novella and two novellas in the new world. And I've got a small extra bonus planned too that I'll tell you more about in a future newsletter.
Q: When will the new stories release?
A: All three novellas will have preorders available at some point, but the dates for those aren't yet locked in. However, I'm roughly expecting them to release in April, July, and September.
Q: Does this mean you'll be writing shorter works going forward?
A: No, this doesn't mean the end of full-length novels and series from me! While I'm excited to explore writing in a shorter story format, I am definitely planning to continue writing full-length novels in 2027 and beyond when I return to writing full-time.
